What is Heliox?

Heliox is a medical gas mixture that consists of helium (He) and oxygen (O₂). This combination is utilized in various medical scenarios, particularly in the treatment of respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The lower density of helium compared to normal air allows for decreased resistance to airflow in the airways, which can facilitate easier breathing for patients experiencing obstructive airway diseases.

Using a mixture of helium and oxygen also helps in reducing work of breathing and improving ventilation, making it beneficial in clinical settings. This usage leverages the unique physical properties of helium, allowing for enhanced delivery of oxygen to the lungs without exacerbating respiratory distress.

Other options describe different gases or mixtures that serve different purposes in medical practice. For instance, pure helium is often not employed alone for lung function testing, nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen is specific for analgesia, and the combination of oxygen with carbon dioxide is utilized for specific diagnostic assessments, such as apnea testing.
