What is Carbogen?

Carbogen is specifically defined as a medical gas mixture that consists of oxygen (O₂) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). This particular combination is utilized in various clinical settings, primarily in the treatment of conditions such as hypoxia and to stimulate respiration. The presence of carbon dioxide in the mix helps to enhance the oxygenation of tissues, as it increases the delivery of oxygen to cells by shifting the oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve to the right, which means hemoglobin releases oxygen more readily.

Other options, while related to various medical gases, do not accurately describe Carbogen. Pure oxygen is indeed used for treating hypoxemia but does not include carbon dioxide. Helium mixed with oxygen is used for specific lung function testing, such as in cases of obstructive lung disease, but it is not related to Carbogen. Nitrogen does serve various functions, including powering surgical instruments, but it is not mixed with oxygen and carbon dioxide, and thus does not describe Carbogen either.
